There are plenty of things that you need to look for when buying a portable filtration unit for camping, hunting, or hiking. Before you buy a portable filtration unit, here are some of the things you need to consider.

1. How much water do you need to generate? This amount will depend on the number of people on the trip as well as the length of the trip. You may be able to get by on a couple of filtered bottles if you're only going out for a day, but they certainly won't be enough for a family trip. Before you can buy a suitable filtration unit, you will need to figure out how much water you'll need.

2. What types of contaminants do you want to be sure to filter out? If there are cysts, debris, metals, chemicals, bacteria, or viruses in the water, the unit will need to be capable of getting rid of them. You can't check for some of these contaminants just by looking at the water. It's best to get a filtration unit that can remove as many contaminants as possible if you aren't exactly sure which ones you're dealing with. 3. Do you need a unit that is lightweight as well as portable? Carrying a filtration unit that's too heavy will make your backpacking trip less exciting. Many filters are made of lightweight materials, such as aluminum, which won't add pounds to what you have to carry. In fact, there are numerous filters available that weigh less than a pound.

4. How much can you afford to spend for a portable water filtration device? Don't think that you have to pay the most money for the best unit. Get one that fits your budget and is able to remove the contaminants that you want. Just make sure that you buy the best product that's in your budget. 5. You will also need to consider whether the device is durable. You may put the device through a lot of abuse over the course of your outdoor activity, so you would want it to be durable. 6. Having a carbon filter is a good idea, so you may want a device that has one. Not all units are equipped with carbon filters.
